Description: the journey will start with the Făgăraș Mountains, Romania’s majestic mountain range in the Southern Carpathians, known as the “Alps of Transylvania”. The peculiar geological structures and glacial landforms carved in crystalline and sedimentary rocks, evidence of past quaternary glaciation in the Carpathians, will be discussed along the spectacular Transfăgărășan Road. The visit will continue with the Piatra Craiului National Park, to understand the importance of complementary cultural and geomorphological heritage in a landscape marked by a sharp limestone mountain ridge with impressive karst landforms. The geological and geomorphological features of the Eastern Carpathians volcanic range are evidence of the last volcanic activity in the Carpathians. Here, the unique structures of the Sfanta Ana crater lake, Mohos crater with peat bog development, and Racos extinct volcano will be visited. Going back into the Transylvanian Basin, the visit will continue with the largest Holocene deep-seated landslides in Transylvania (Ro: glimee), the medieval town of Sighișoara (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Ocna Sibiului salt diapir and mining sites and the Rapa Rosie spectacular erosional geomorphosite.
